Child pathway eligibility
The child and young person pathway is for ages 7 to 18.
An individual suitability review considers the young person’s needs, consent and whether virtual assessment is appropriate.
- Adults may seek their own assessment. A parent or person with parental responsibility may seek assessment for a child or young person. Professionals need the relevant permission and authority.
- Concerns about attention, activity or impulsivity and their effect on everyday functioning are considered alongside history and alternative explanations.
- Confidential video assessment needs suitable technology and privacy, or reasonable adjustments that make the format workable.
- Relevant consent or authority is needed. Developmental, educational or other information may be sought where clinically appropriate. Missing old records alone does not exclude a referral.
- A clinician reviews whether virtual assessment is safe and appropriate. Urgent or more complex needs may require another service; coexisting conditions do not automatically exclude someone.
More than one perspective
The assessment considers development, everyday functioning and experiences across settings. With appropriate permission, information from parents, carers, school or other professionals may help build that picture.
A missing school report is not, on its own, a reason to decide an assessment is impossible. A clinician would consider any evidence gaps.
The young person’s voice matters
The young person should be involved in a way that suits their understanding and communication needs. Consent, parental responsibility and the ability to make decisions need individual consideration.
A parent does not automatically have access to all of a young person’s confidential information. Information sharing needs appropriate authority and safeguarding consideration.
Privacy and safety on video
BrightMind offers ADHD assessment by secure video only.
The assessment pathway requires a suitable private setting, clarity about who is present and a clinical review of whether video is appropriate. Arrangements for communication and accessibility must be agreed before assessment.
